INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH & CONSULTANCY CENTRE OFFICE OF THE DEAN(R&D) INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY,BOMBAY.
Circular No. 59/2018
RECRUITMENT FOR PROJECT
Applications are invited from the citizens of India for filling up the following temporary
for the sponsored project
Interdisciplinary program in Systems & Control Engineering
of this Institute. The
temporary initially for a period of
and tenable only for the duration of the project. The requisite qualification & experience etc. are given below:
Project Code, Project Title & Funding Agency
About the project: Autonomous exploration is an important research area for both civil and military applications. Given a bounded environment, we want a group of autonomous vehicles to explore it. The environment is assumed to be structured e.g. a city with roads that provides the pathway for the vehicles and the buildings along the road are the obstacles. The vehicles should collaboratively reach every portion in the environment.
The developed algorithm will be judged based on the time taken to complete the exploration. Following issues would be considered while developing the algorithm: Structure of the environment is unknown. The vehicles work in a decentralized structure. The algorithm is online. Communication between the vehicles is constrained. Each vehicle would generate a local map of the region it explores. The exploration strategy would ensure time/energy optimal coverage of the entire region. Challenges lie in merging the local maps and declaring completion of the task. The complexity of the algorithm will be studied and aim will be to develop a strategy that is scalable both in terms of number of vehicles and the area of the region. Robustness to vehicle failures is also ensured by the decentralized structure. Since it is online, it is scalable in terms of the size of the environment.
The developed algorithm will also be applicable in following situations: 1. When the environment is known, for offline path planning of a group vehicle. 2. Building a map of an unknown environment. 3. Exploring with a centralized controller. 4. Autonomous exploration with manual interrupts.
