About the project: Development of high performance electrochemical energy storage device based on core/shell structured Si nanowires _
Investigator: Prof Amartya Mukhopadhyay _
The research will be initially directed towards developing and understanding Si nanowire based anode materials for alkali metal ion batteries (the scope encompassing, both Li-ion and Na-ion batteries). The ultra-fine dimensions, careful tuning of the core/shell structure, transitioning from crystalline core to amorphous shell through micro-crystalline interfaces, and the concomitant physical/electrochemical properties are expected to allow the development of electrode materials with very high Li- and Na-storage capacities and rate capabilities; and hence, the corresponding batteries having very high energy storage capacities and power densities (i.e., ability to get charged/discharged very fast, as is needed in electric vehicles). This will be made feasible by the development of suitable nanostructured cathode materials, as well. The work will eventually involve development of actual high performance batteries based on the research output and understanding, leading to the development of prototype (in association with a collaborating industry). The final device is expected to work both, as battery, as well as supercapacitor, as per the demand of the application. Some preliminary results based on the proposed work has been published as [J. Mater. Chem. A, 6 (2018) 3422-3434] (for reference). The skill sets that the concerned student will develop involve developing nanostructures, characterization and understanding of the same, electro-analytical techniques and the associated fundamentals, and various aspects related to batteries and electrochemical energy storage.
Preferred academic background: M Tech (or even B Tech / MSc) in Materials Science/Engineering (and associated areas) and/or physics/chemistry.
