Title of the Project | Real-Time Traffic Simulation with Integration of Live Sensor Data |
Brief description of the project | This project aims to build a real-time traffic simulation platform that integrates live or recorded sensor data (e.g., from loop detectors, CCTV, or GPS devices) to dynamically simulate traffic on selected road networks using open-source tools like SUMO. The simulation will allow for real-time visualization, analysis, and short-term forecasting of traffic conditions. This project can serve as a stepping stone toward adaptive traffic management systems tailored to Indian urban scenarios. |
Project Duration | 6 months |
Expected outcomes of the project | 1. A working simulation of a selected urban road network with real or emulated sensor data integration
2. Comparison and validation of simulation outputs with actual sensor data 3. Technical documentation and dashboard visualizations to demonstrate the simulation outcomes 4. Insights on how real-time data can improve traffic prediction and management |
Possible learning outcomes for the interns | 1. Exposure to traffic simulation tools (e.g., SUMO, TraCI)
2. Experience in integrating real-world data into simulation platforms 3. Understanding of Indian traffic behavior and transportation modeling 4. Hands-on practice in data handling, Python programming, and visualization techniques |
Requirements from the interns |
Degrees | Second year of a Masters program Third / fourth year of a Bachelors program |
Discipline | Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Data Science, Interdisciplinary Programs related to AI or Transportation |
Technical background (eg. Courses that should have been done, topics that should have been known) |
1. Basic knowledge of transportation systems or traffic engineering (preferred)
2. Introductory courses in programming and data structures 3. Familiarity with Python and handling geospatial or time-series data |
Specific skill set (eg. Programming, theoretical reasoning, constructing mathematical proofs, handling specific laboratory equipments such as CRO, Electron Microscope etc.) |
1. Programming in Python (mandatory)
2. Experience or willingness to learn SUMO traffic simulator and TraCI API 3. Ability to process sensor data (CSV, JSON, or API-based) 4. Basic understanding of traffic flow concepts and simulation logic 5. Optional but preferred: experience with OpenStreetMap, QGIS, or data visualization tools (e.g., Plotly, Dash) |
